These are the best foods for children with stomach acid problems

Stomach problems are inherent in adults. Most adults have a poor diet, high-stress levels, and other lifestyles that can cause stomach acid problems, such as smoking and consuming alcoholic beverages.

However, in addition to adults, it turns out that children also often experience stomach acid problems. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, most stomach acid problems in children are caused by a weak lower esophageal sphincter.

However, esophageal stringer problems are not the only cause; several conditions can increase the risk of stomach problems in children, including:

  • Consume foods such as sweets, chocolate, and high-fat foods.

  • Children are obese

  • Taking certain medications, such as antidepressants, antihistamines, and pain medications

  • Being in an environment of active smokers.

Like adults, the habit of putting a child to sleep or taking a child to bed shortly after eating can cause stomach acid problems.

How to treat stomach acid problems in children

Treating stomach acid problems in children is the same as treating stomach acid in adults, namely by avoiding the leading causes of acid reflux, including reducing the consumption of high-sugar foods, such as candy, donuts, and others.

Meanwhile, for those who are obese, we should encourage children to do lots of physical activity and do a healthy diet. Keep children away from smokers, and encourage them to do activities after eating so they do not go to sleep or lie down right away.

If needed, we can ask our child to take antacids. However, before that, we consult with our doctor to ensure the medication and dosage are right. Although antacids are safe for children, they need the correct dose for them.

Foods to ward off stomach acid in children

In addition to taking antacid drugs, several foods are recommended for children to consume to control stomach acid production while preventing stomach acid problems from recurring. Some of them are:

  • Lean fish, such as tuna, salmon, sardines, and cod, effectively relieve the work of the stomach organs. In addition, the protein content is suitable for treating stomach ulcers.

  • Bananas are the best food for those who have problems with stomach acid. This fruit is alkaline and contains many nutrients that are good for health.

  • Oatmeal is the best source of carbohydrates for children because of its high fiber content. This fiber content can also help prevent stomach acid relapse.

  • In addition to bananas, children are advised to consume fruits with low intakes and not contain gas, such as pears, apples, watermelons, and melons.

  • In addition to oatmeal, we can replace our child's carbohydrate source by consuming whole grain bread. Choose whole-grain bread with added sesame seeds and other whole grains.

  • Green vegetables contain high fiber and are effective at controlling stomach acid production. Remember, avoid gassy vegetables like cabbage and broccoli.

  • Do not forget to stay away from high-fat foods, especially junk food that is high in calories and does not provide the nutrients our child needs. High-fat foods may loosen the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) muscle and make it easier for stomach acid to rise into the esophagus.

In addition, high-fat foods can stimulate the release of the hormone cholecystokinin, which relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter muscle, increasing the risk of acid reflux and causing stomach acid problems.

Stomach acid problems in children should not be underestimated. Immediately contact a doctor for a better solution.
